Ecos: La Brea currently centers on five playable Ice Age mammals: Dire Wolf, Saber-tooth Cat, Western Horse, Ancient Bison, and Columbian Mammoth. The official Roblox description names all five and gives each a distinct job: wolves pack together, sabers ambush, bison lock horns, horses travel freely, and mammoths change the landscape. Your best first choice depends less on a tier list and more on whether you want pursuit, ambush, migration, herd defense, or environmental play.

Two of the five are natural starting points for the unlock path. Community documentation consistently treats Dire Wolf and Western Horse as the practical entries: a wolf can pursue the Peccary condition for Saber-tooth Cat, while a horse can mark a predator for Ancient Bison. Columbian Mammoth has a separate fossil quest. Exact stats and group limits can change, so the guides focus on repeatable roles and actions rather than declaring one animal permanently strongest.

Choose by playstyle

Predator or herbivore

Dire Wolf and Saber-tooth Cat are the two documented playable carnivores. Both can claim territory and hunt, but their approach is different. Wolves are built around pursuit and pack pressure. Their community-documented secondary action changes between a latch and a heavier bite depending on the target. Sabers have lower chase endurance and depend more on concealment, a well-placed pounce, and winning the ring minigame against large herbivores.

Western Horse, Ancient Bison, and Columbian Mammoth are herbivores. Horses turn information into distance: spot danger early, mark it, and use flee mode when escape is the better decision. Bison trade some of that evasive identity for charge pressure, herd formation, and jousting. Mammoths occupy the largest, most environmental role; the official description explicitly says they terraform the landscape, while community documentation describes knocking down trees and reopening waterholes.

The predator/herbivore split also changes progression. Carnivores use territory and hunting missions. Horses and bison use migration zones and predator-marking tasks. Mammoth has herbivore missions and animal-specific environmental actions. The Progression hub explains how Tracks, missions, and Instincts connect without treating old reward values as permanent.

Free choices and badge unlocks

The public badge list gives three durable conditions. Hunt and kill a Peccary to unlock Saber-tooth Cat. Mark a predator to unlock Ancient Bison. Complete the mammoth quest to unlock Columbian Mammoth. Those conditions come from Roblox’s badge descriptions and are stronger evidence than a guide that merely says an animal is “rare.”

Use Unlock Saber-tooth Cat when you need help finding the right prey and making sure the final kill belongs to you. Use Unlock Ancient Bison for the mark workflow and current control warning. Use Unlock Columbian Mammoth for the skeleton, fossil-zone, and progress-confirmation route.

Do not delete save-linked Roblox badges. The official descriptions warn that deleting them may cause a loss of in-game progress. If a badge appears but the animal remains locked, rejoin once and check the selection screen before attempting the entire condition again.

Live, NPC, and upcoming are different statuses

The official Ecos fauna page groups named animals, but its layout also says new playable animals are coming soon. On October 19, 2026, the Roblox description still identifies the five established playables above. Orcutt’s Coyote and Harington’s Pony are officially named on the fauna page, but this guide does not promote them into the live roster without a matching current selection-screen confirmation.

NPC animals matter even when you cannot select them. The official fauna page lists Dwarf Pronghorn, Prairie Rattlesnake, Flat-headed Peccary, Turkey Vulture, Brush Rabbit, Great Blue Heron, and Botta’s Pocket Gopher, with Steelhead Trout marked coming soon. Peccary is especially important because the Saber badge condition names it. NPC status should never be converted into a playable claim just because an animal appears in the world.

A strong first session with any animal

Before moving far, open Bio stats and the settings panel. Read the current diet, health, group information, and animal-specific actions shown by the live client. Learn the normal walk, sprint, attack or defensive action, scent, rest, stand, map, and safe return-to-menu flow. Device layouts differ, and older guides may show a previous mark key.

Pick one goal for the session. A wolf might practice approaching AI prey without immediately chasing. A horse might travel between visible migration zones while keeping escape terrain ahead. A bison can learn charge spacing before accepting a joust. A saber can practice concealment and pounce placement on manageable prey. A mammoth can identify tree and water interactions before traveling with a herd.

Survival is more useful than forcing a fight. Community documentation connects longer survival with a better Tracks multiplier, while dying can interrupt an unlock attempt or long route. Leave space around tar, watch stamina before you commit, and use the normal menu countdown only when the game permits it.

Group decisions

Joining a group helps social animals, but a crowded group does not remove role discipline. Wolves should avoid every member latching at once without an exit plan. Horses should agree on a migration direction and mark threats early. Bison can form a defensive line rather than chasing a faster predator across open ground. Mammoths need room to turn and should avoid blocking smaller herd members near water or tar.

Public community pages publish exact group limits, damage, coat counts, and sex-based differences. Those values can change with balance updates, so each animal guide labels them as community reported or leaves them out when they are not needed for the decision. Use the live Bio stats as the final authority for your current animal.

What to verify after an update

Recheck four things when the Roblox title, description, or client changes: which animals appear on the selection screen; which animals are locked; which control labels are shown in settings; and whether a documented action still behaves the same. Then check the official fauna page for announced additions and the public badge descriptions for altered conditions.

Avoid importing claims about crafting, taming, base building, levels, ore, or tranquilizer equipment from generic survival guides. The verified experience is an animal-survival game built around ecosystems, survival, missions, migration, territory, and species-specific actions.
